As someone my friends like to call "witchy," I've long been drawn to fragrances that tell a moodier, more mysterious story. As opposed to the light and airy scents of summer, winter perfumes—in all their woodsy, warm, and slightly spicy glory—have always suited my personality more than any other seasonal scent. But as sticky-sweet gourmands and sugar-rush vanillas threaten to overwhelm the world of winter fragrance in 2026, there is a deeper, darker, more alluring streak of scents ascending this season. That, my friend, is what I'm calling the "forbidden fruit" fragrance.

Fruity perfumes are nothing new. Though, they have taken on a life of their own this calendar year. From the debut of YSL's Libre Berry Crush with its fresh raspberry notes to Dolce & Gabbana's melon-splashed Your Devotion, fruity scents have dominated the market since early 2026. But as the sun retracts its rays for winter, it seems this trend is only growing—though in a more earthy, melancholy way. "After the explosion of playful, juicy fruits, we're moving toward darker, more sensual expressions," perfumer Erwan Raguenes of DSM-Firmenich previously told Who What Wear. These scents stray from bright bergamot and juicy pineapple to richer, deeper fruits like plum, pomegranate, and black cherry—often accompanied by the woody freshness of balsam, the regality of oud, or the blazing warmth of amber.

If winter gourmands are firelit Hallmark movie scenes inside a snow globe, forbidden fruit fragrances are haunting forests blanketed in frost, sparkling below snow-swollen gray clouds. Snowflakes dance on pinecone scales; icy oxblood berries glow in the low winter light. Breathe it in—this is what we're bottling.
